Wooster Roofing Contractors Who Don't Cut Corners
Hershberger Brothers Roofing is a family-run roofing company in Wooster, Ohio, owned by twin brothers Mervin and Marvin Hershberger. Mervin climbs your roof for the free inspection and walks you through what he finds. Marvin leads the 6-man crew that does the work. Our roofing crew is our own, not a rotating list of subcontractors.
We install Owens Corning shingles as an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, back our labor with a 5-year workmanship warranty, and finish most roof replacements in a single day. When a job needs more time to be done right, it gets more time. As Mervin puts it, "If it takes me 2 days to do a job in order to do it right, then that's what we do."
What Our Free Roof Inspection Finds That You Can't See From the Yard
Most homeowners who call us think their roof is fine. From the driveway, it usually looks fine. But when Mervin climbs up and checks it up close, he often finds water getting in that nobody has noticed yet. It hasn't reached the ceiling, so there's been no sign of it from inside. Here's what we find most often on homes around Wooster.
Leaks that never reach your ceiling
Water doesn't always drip into the living room. Often it runs down to the overhang and drips out through the soffit, where nobody looks. The roof has been leaking for months, and the house gives no sign.
Rotting roof decking
The shingles on top can look fine while the wood deck underneath is going soft. The deck is what holds the roof together. Once it rots, a simple repair turns into a bigger job.
Worn flashing and cracked chimney grout
Flashing seals the corners, valleys and chimney, the spots where most leaks start. When the flashing wears out, or the grout around the chimney cracks, water slips behind it and works into the deck.
Damage from Ohio winters
Ice builds up at the edge of the roof and backs water up under the shingles. On top of that, an Ohio January can swing from 60 degrees one day to 20 the next. That constant expansion and contraction wears a roof out early. The decking rots over the winter, and nobody notices until summer.
How the inspection works
We climb your roof. No drone flyover. Problems like soft decking and failed flashing only show up when someone walks the roof and looks up close.
We show you what we find. You see the problem spots and the photos before we recommend anything.
You get a written estimate if you want one. If you only want your roof checked, that's fine too. No estimate, no pressure.
Storm damage gets documented. Ohio sees a hailstorm or two most springs. If we find storm damage, we take the photos you'll need for an insurance claim. More on our storm damage repair page.

Why We Cost More Than a "Chuck in a Truck"
We'll be straight with you: we don't win every job on price. Not long ago, a homeowner called us after firing the roofer she'd hired halfway through the job. When our estimate came in at about double his, her first question was why. Here's our answer, and it's the same one Mervin gives every homeowner who asks.
We don't cut corners on materials
Owens Corning Duration® shingles, new flashing at every chimney, valley and wall, and new sheeting wherever the deck needs it. The cheapest bid usually saves its money on the parts you can't see from the ground.
We don't rush jobs to make money
Most of our roofs go on in a day. When a roof needs more time, it gets more time. And our own crew does the work. We don't hand your house to whoever bid lowest for the labor.
We carry full insurance
A "Chuck in a truck" shows up without insurance. If something goes wrong on his job, you're the one on the hook. With us, in Mervin's words, "the homeowner can rest easy knowing they're going to be fully covered, not on the hook for anything."
"There's a certain number that reputable companies need to be at to make it make sense." We'll walk you through every line of your estimate, so you know exactly what you're paying for.
What Goes Into the Cost of a New Roof
Every roof is priced differently, which is why we inspect yours before we put a number on paper. Here's what moves the price, so nothing in your estimate catches you off guard.
Roof size
Roofs are priced by the "square," a 10×10-foot section. A bigger house or a roof with more sections means more squares.
What's under the shingles
If the deck is rotted or soft, it has to be replaced before new shingles go on. Some older homes have spaced plank decking, which by code needs to be fully re-sheeted.
Flashing and chimney work
Worn flashing gets replaced, and cracked chimney grout gets repaired. These are the spots where most leaks start, so we don't skip them.
Shingles or metal
Asphalt shingles and metal roofing are priced differently. We'll walk you through both.
Storm damage and insurance
If hail or wind caused the damage, your insurance may cover much of the cost. We document what we find so you have what you need to file.
Financing is available, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option.
Free, written, and no pressure. We'll explain every line before you decide.

A+ RatingWhat Homeowners Say After the Job Is Done
Don't take our word for it. Here's what our customers say on Google.
Owens Corning Shingles, Backed by Two Warranties
As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we install Owens Corning Duration® shingles on our roof replacements. We picked them for one reason above the rest: the SureNail® strip. It's a reinforced fabric strip along the nailing line that grips the nails and helps hold each shingle down in high wind. That's our answer when homeowners ask, "Will these blow off in the next big storm?"

If you sell your home, both warranties transfer to the new owner, which helps when it's time to list.

Roofing Questions We Hear Most
Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask us before they hire a roofer.
How do you price a new roof?
Every roof is priced after we inspect it. The price depends on the size of your roof, the condition of the deck underneath, how much flashing and chimney work it needs, and whether you choose shingles or metal. Your free written estimate breaks it all down line by line, so you know exactly what you're paying for.
How long will a new shingle roof last?
Installed correctly, most homeowners won't need to replace their roof again. Ohio weather is the biggest threat. Wide temperature swings and winter ice wear a roof out early when it isn't installed right. That's why we check the deck and replace the flashing on every job. Our shingles carry an Owens Corning limited lifetime warranty.
Will my shingles blow off in a big storm?
We install Owens Corning Duration® shingles with the SureNail® strip, a reinforced fabric strip along the nailing line that grips the nails and helps hold shingles down in high wind. Proper installation matters just as much as the shingle, and that part is on us.
Is a metal roof better than shingles?
It mostly comes down to preference. Both systems, installed correctly, should be the last roof most homeowners buy. Some people worry that metal roof fasteners start leaking after about 10 years. We haven't found that to be the case. We'll walk you through both options and help you choose what fits your home.
Do you work with insurance companies on storm damage claims?
Yes. After a hail or wind storm, we inspect your roof and tell you straight whether filing a claim makes sense. Once you choose us, we share our photos and documentation with your insurance company. If your shingle has been discontinued, we can provide an ITEL report showing it can't be matched.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most of our roof replacements are done in a single day. Bigger roofs, or roofs that need deck repairs, can take longer, and when a job needs more time to be done right, it gets more time.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing is available, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option. Ask about it during your free inspection.
Do you work year-round?
We work through spring, summer and fall, and shut down for winter in mid-December. If you're planning a fall replacement, book your inspection early.
